What is a Prop Firm Consistency Rule?

A consistency rule limits the percentage of total profit that a single trading day can represent when you request a payout or submit challenge results. Common limits are 30%, 40%, and 50%.

For instance, under a 40% consistency rule with $5,000 in total profit, no single day can exceed $2,000 in profit ($5,000 × 40%). If your best day made $3,000, your best-day share is 60%, and your payout will be paused until you make more profit on subsequent days.

Myth Busted

At most reputable prop firms, failing the consistency rule DOES NOT breach or forfeit your account. It simply requires you to log additional trading days to dilute the share of your biggest day.

The Exact Formula to Dilute a Monster Day

If your best day was $3,000 and your firm limit is 40%, the formula for the total profit you need is:

Total Profit Needed = Best Day ÷ (Limit % ÷ 100) = $3,000 ÷ 0.40 = $7,500.

If your current total profit is $5,500, you need exactly $2,000 in additional profits across future trading sessions to dilute your best day down to 40%.

Prop Firms Without Consistency Rules

If you prefer to trade high-volatility news events or hold runners without calculating daily profit shares, choose a firm that has eliminated consistency rules on funded accounts, such as Alpha Prop.

Calculate your best-day share by dividing your highest single-day profit by your total cumulative profit. If this share exceeds your firm limit (e.g. 40%), calculate extra profit needed as: (Best Day ÷ Limit) - Total Profit.
